One Piece: My Road to 50 Volumes

It's crazy to think that now, with 49 volumes behind me, I'm halfway through the currently available volumes of One Piece. It's an intimidating series, and it did take me a while to get here, but once you get to a point like this, the dream of one day catching up doesn't seem so impossible anymore.

I started reading One Piece in December 2019 - almost exactly 23 months ago. That means my average reading speed has been about two volumes per month, but of course that's not quite the reality: I've taken many breaks, some many months long, and to make up for that, some months I've read multiple volumes! Below is a chart that shows where I've been in the story at any given time:

(Interactive chart can be found here.)

Divided into sagas, my progress has been roughly this:

  • East Blue: December 2019 - March 2020
  • Alabasta: March-November 2020
  • Sky Island: November-December 2020
  • Water Seven: December 2020 - September 2021
  • Thriller Bark: September 2021 - current
As you can see, my reading speed has varied a lot. The Sky Island saga took me less than two months, while Water Seven after it took nine. (To put it into perspective: Sky Island, 18% of the story, took just 9% of my total reading time, while Water Seven, 31% of the story, took 39%.)

When I reach the timeskip (which I estimate should happen before the end of next January), I'm planning to write an in-depth review of the story up to that point. But for now, I'll just leave this simple statement: One Piece is a damn good manga, and I don't regret taking this journey one bit.
